LUSUMA Welfare

LUSUMA's Welfare Department is here to support you throughout your time at Leicester.
Coming to university is a massive step, and it’s normal to experience some turbulence in your time at medical school. LUSUMA and its members are an important support network full of friendly, approachable and like-minded individuals.
You’re never alone if you’re struggling with something whilst at Leicester and we’re here to help you through it. No problem is too small, and there is no such thing as a silly question. We have recently merged with the Medics’ Welfare Society (a LUSUMA sub-society) to use our combined resources to help more people, and are very open to any suggestions of how better to provide support. Feel free to use the form at the bottom of the page to get in touch.
We hope that medical school is the best five years it can be, but remember these pastoral resources exist for a reason. Throw yourself into university life, safe in the knowledge that we have your back when you need it.
Your LUSUMA Welfare Officer, Joyita, is your first port of call for anything you feel you need to talk about. She can put you in touch with university or medical school welfare services (some of which are found in the ‘Useful Services and External Links’ section below), or just sit down for a cup of tea. For more information, use the contact form at the bottom of the page or email welfare@lusuma.com

Welfare Pages
Here are a set of buttons that can direct you to key themes that fall under Welfare - simply click on them to visit the page they link to.
The section for 'Frequently Asked Questions' is updated periodically as weird and wonderful questions are posed to us, and the other pages are as up to date as possible. The 'Useful Services & External Links' page is worth a read - it’s a long list of links to welfare-related services and websites, both within the university and outside. If you have any further questions please don’t hesitate to get in touch - scroll down to the bottom to find a form.

Welfare Committee
LUSUMA Welfare Officer - Joyita Saha
welfare@lusuma.com

Hi there!
This is Joyita, your welfare officer.Starting medical school in general can be daunting, but if it happens in the middle of a pandemic, I’m sure it can be very stressful. The circumstances are certainly unique, but this is where the welfare and the rest of the LUSUMA committees’ roles come into play. We are here to help you navigate through this, especially during the introweek. We are just an email away, even if we cannot aid you vis-a-vis. I’m always here for any help you need, whether it’s about settling in a new place or any other problem you're dealing with.
As a welfare officer, I will help you as much as I can within my capabilities, and further signpost you to various support systems available at the University of Leicester. This includes our own medical school pastoral support, academic support and various other teams dealing with mental health and wellbeing, housing advice and other services at the Student Union.
One of my main priorities this year is to normalise talking about mental health and wellbeing among medical students. This new journey as a medical student can be very different from what you are used to, regardless of your background- be it A levels or graduate entry. It’s absolutely normal to experience moments of uncertainty and anxiety. I aim to create a non-judgemental environment where all medical students can voice out their struggles. It is very important that you resolve your feelings with the support of your peers and the services we have. If you ever feel overwhelmed and do not know where to ask for help, I am here to signpost you to the right services. We also have an anonymous advice portal on our LUSUMA website, where you can ask questions anonymously and get stellar advice from Agony Aunt. This helps to raise awareness among your peers within the comfort of protecting your anonymity.

LUSUMA Vice President of Academic, Welfare and Sponsorship - Gaurika Puri
vpaws@lusuma.com

Hello there!
I’m Gaurika, the Vice President of Academic, Welfare and Sponsorship for this year. My role is to oversee LUSUMA’s provision of academic and welfare services, supporting Sadik the Academic Officer and Joyita the Welfare Officer in their job roles and helping them out where I can. Going into my sixth year at Leicester I've been through it all and I'm always available to offer any advice if needed.I'm also in charge of organising Medic Parents, which provides a great support network for our new freshers, and sponsorships to make sure you get the best deals possible!
You can get hold of me for any reason by email at vpaws@lusuma.com. No problem is too big or too small - if I can’t help then I will probably know somebody who can.
If you’re a masochist and particularly want to know a little bit more about me, feel free to check out my bio page below:
