MedReach
MedReach is an innovative widening participation outreach scheme for Medicine, and is a collaboration between The University of Leicester Medical School, its students and the University Widening Participation Team. The aim of MedReach is to help young people from widening participation backgrounds in the East Midlands to get into Medicine.
MedReach offers both paid work and volunteering opportunities such as:
1) The Summer Schools. The Summer Schools introduces Year 10 students to Medicine as a subject, combining advice and guidance with taster sessions. Each year we run a pre and post-16 Medicine & Allied Health Summer school. The pre-16 one introduces Year 10 students to Medicine & other Allied Health subjects combining advice and guidance with taster sessions. The post 16 one looks at some of the finer details of applying to university as well as some practical sessions on things like UCAT & the MMIs. We are always looking for people to help out with sessions during these summer schools.
2) Primary and secondary outreach activities. MedReach students can receive training to develop activities to run in local schools to raise students’ aspirations and to teach them about Medicine and human biology.
3) Ad hoc events. MedReach students represent the Medical School at events all over the country, raising aspirations and advising students about applying to Medicine.
4) Back to School scheme. MedReach students are encouraged to go back to their old school to talk to students about applying to Medicine.
If you are interested in hearing about any of these opportunities please email us at [email protected] and we will be in touch.
